About Me

Hi! My name is Elina Vanuska and I am a senior at Notre Dame High School! I enjoy swimming, water polo, surfing and basically anything aquatic. I’m very passionate about sports, especially aquatic sports, and I want to know more about the physical effects of being so active. I also have a recurring shoulder injury due to swimming and water polo that has pushed me to learn more about the human body. This leads me into the fact that I’m interested in human biology, marine biology and biology in general. I’m not really sure what I want to do with this passion, however, I’m taking AP Bio and Sports Medicine to find out more of what I want to do. Along with biology and sports, I also love traveling, baking and hanging out with friends. I’m very excited to start both AP Bio and Sports Medicine to learn more about biology in general, the specific aspects of the human body and sports, and how all that relates back to me. I expect both of these courses to be fun and challenging at the same time, because having to memorize lots of muscles and information on cells is going to be a lot of work. However, I’m definitely looking forward to a good year!

End of the year reflection!

This experience of creating a website and publishing content was definitely one that I will remember and utilize the skills learned in the future. I never thought I would be creating a website in high school, so it was definitely a new experience for me. At first, it seemed very daunting, however, because I use this website to update content for various classes, I have been able to constantly update the site, become more efficient at creating posts and know what the audience is looking for. I personally thought the pages and presentations I did on Progeria and Ebola. Those projects I put a lot of research, effort and creativity to create and I will definitely remember those projects, as we even tried to come up with solutions and cures to the Ebola virus. This website has been a way for me to publish what content I’m learning in biology and connect with people who are also learning similar things as I am. This website has created a community of biology students for me to be able to network with. I also realized that collaboration with other people and students are big parts of education and work and reading and commenting on other people’s websites was definitely interesting, as I was able to see other people’s opinions and projects.

I have learned how to publish and maintain a website, which I believe will be helpful in the future as many jobs and opportunities utilize WordPress, website creation and other digital tools that I have learned to use this year. I’m not sure if I will be using this website the next school year, however I will be keeping it up so other students and interested readers can look at the content. I plan on majoring in a life science related field at UCLA next year, perhaps biology or neuroscience, however nothing is certain and only time will tell. This blog was a great experience and I’m glad I got the opportunity to learn how to not only maintain a blog, but also learn to present myself on the internet and create a presence for myself!

Here are my tips for the future students of AP Bio!

Feel free to look at my posts and pages that I’ve created throughout the year!

  1. Hi Elina, I enjoyed reading about your hobbies and passion about the water and science. You sound very motivated and serious about pursuing some kind of career in the science world. How did your love for those things start? My dad majored in marine biology and he loved it, so I’m sure you will too! I look forward to seeing where science takes you this year!

  2. Hi Elina,
I loved your video presentation that was about yourself, the courses you are taking, and what you are looking forward to in this class. I enjoyed the part where you talked about your passion, which is marine life and biology. I also enjoy swimming and was a swim instructor at Merry Moppet Preschool and taught kids ages 3-8 how to swim. It was a very rewarding experience and there were definitely some kids who I believe will be on the swim team when they get older. Do you know where you want to go to college to pursue a career in marine life? To improve your blog, I recommend that you talk more about what you are hoping to get out of this class.

  4. Hey Elina! Your last name is so cool, what nationality is it? The picture of you guys underwater is so cool! It looks like you guys have a great time at practices. I’m sorry about your shoulder injury, is it both shoulders or just one and why does it keep coming back? Does it discourage you at all from continuing swimming or playing water polo? It doesn’t seem like it because of how passionate you sound about the aquatic sports you do. I couldn’t agree with you more that memorizing all the muscles we have in our body is going to be very challenging but we will all accomplish it together! I think it’s very cool how you are also taking AP Bio. I love how you are challenging yourself and are not letting difficult things slow you down! Your blog looks great with the ocean theme and the fishing rod on the side! You are very creative with the background moving, having it relate to what you love and all your pictures on the video! The only thing I would suggest is to put a little more time on reading the words on your video but I might just be a slow reader. Otherwise everything looks tremendous! Keep up the good work Elina!

  5. Hey Elina! I know you have worked really hard on your website this year in both Bio and Sports Med, and it really paid off! I love that you have such a wide variety of posts, videos, and investigations for readers to click through. Everything is so organized and all of your projects are very high quality and creative. One of my favorite posts of yours was the Progeria voicethread. You and Davis formatted the voicethread in a very engaging way with the “doctor’s journal” idea, and you spread awareness of a very important and sad disease. One memory I have from this year was working on the scavenger hunt and CSI NDB projects. I love how our scavenger hunt group worked together really well, and I will never forget you dressed up as Charlotte the Pig for CSI, cracking up at the fact that you had just “come back from yoga.” I hope you have a ton of fun in college and I’m sure we will talk soon 🙂

  7. Hi Elina! I can tell you’ve put a lot of time and effort into your blog this year because it looks great! You have a huge variety of posts and your voice comes through in each one. I think it’s really cool how you’re taking both AP Bio and sports medicine, it shows you really have a love for science and I love how you’re taking classes that really interest you. While reading through your reflection over the past year I related to it a lot. I was also a little worried about maintaining a blog all year but I’ve really learned a lot. I’m so happy we were able to take this class together! We’ve made a ton of memories from our Meiosis stop motion animation to the scavenger hunt and more! I’m sure we’ll stay in touch next year but good luck at UCLA, I know you’ll do amazing things!
